Meetings & ProgramsProgram for February - Quilt College. Four stations will be set up to demonstrate:
Bring a couple fat quarters for this month's speakers and we'll divide them among the four ladies. Library - Please bring your old magazines to donate to the RQG Library. Spring Retreat - Guild Spring Retreat (March 5-7) at the Greenbriar Retreat in Eustace, TX. The cost will be $160 with a $50 non-refundable deposit due at the January meeting. The final payment will be due at the February meeting. Block of the MonthGeneral Instructions: Bring your completed blocks back to the next RQG monthly meeting for a chance to win all of the blocks. You can also purchase chances to win the completed quilt blocks. January 2010 (due in February) - The Three Martini Star. A 6" block that is paper pieced. Use bright fabrics with a solid background. Do not remove the paper from the block. December 2009 (due in January) - Lunar Eclipse block Congratulations to Carol Miskin on winning the January blocks. November, 2009(due in December) - Snowflake quilt block. Colors of green, red, and white fabrics for Christmas. Congratulations to Rebecca Lowe on winning the November blocks. October, 2009(due in November)- Maple Leaf Quilt Block. Fall colors with a tan background. Congratulations to Carol Miskin on winning the October blocks. September, 2009(due in October) - Paper pieced Halloween themed blocks. Five patterns to choose from: Candy Corn, a Trick or Treat Bag, a Black Cat, a Pumpkin, and a Caramel Apple. All blocks should print out to 4 1/2" x 4 1/2" unfinished. The blocks should have a white background. Congratulations to Sharon Blalock on winning the September blocks. August, 2009(due in September) - Appliqued flower. Using batiks, the flower is red, pink, orange or yellow, and is centered on a 10 1/2" green square. The flower center is dark brown, with a red, pink, orange or yellow "plus sign" in the middle. Use your favorite applique method: fusible with blanket stitch or zigzag or straight stitch or any decorative stitch around the edge, or you can needle-turn applique by hand. Congratulations to Marge Goehl on winning the August blocks. July, 2009 (due in August) - Black & White Strip Pieced block. Use black and white fabrics and an 11" square paper towel or piece of muslin for a foundation. Congratulations to Cathy Pace on winning the July blocks. June, 2009 (due in July) - Civil War fabrics with cream to beige background – Pick & Choose pattern from the cover of American Patchwork Quilting (June 2009). Congratulations to Melissa Eberle on winning the June blocks. May, 2009 (due in June) - Snowball pattern, including left-over blocks from this year's raffle quilt. Made with white backgrounds and pastel batiks. Congratulation to Susan Bloch & Sharon Blalock on winning the May blocks. April, 2009 (due in May) - Bow Tie pattern. The tie part should be made from bright stripes or polka dots. The background should be white on white. Your block will be 5" and will finish to 4 1/2" in the quilt. Congratulations to Susan Bloch for winning the April blocks. March, 2009 (due in April) - Folded pinwheel block using bright, juvenile colors, with a white background. Congratulations to Carol Miskin on winning the March blocks. February, 2009 (due in March) - Quilt block using the pattern provided at the February guild meeting, made from 30's fabrics and white background fabric. Congratulations to Joanne Kamper for winning the February blocks. January, 2009 (due in February) - Quilt blocks using the pattern provided at the January guild meeting, made from batik fabrics. Congratulations to Kellie Leyba for winning the January blocks. December, 2008 (due in January) - A block of four 3 3/4" finished snowballs made from civil war fabrics (see picture below). Please refer to the February 2009 Issue 96 of American Patchwork & Quilting, if you need help with your snowball blocks. Congratulations to Marge Goehl for winning the December blocks. November, 2008 (due in December) - A signature block made of bright colors. Cut 2 pieces of two different scrappy material strips, 4 1/2 X 10 in. and cut 1 piece of white material into a strip 2 1/2 X 10 inches. Sew the 4 1/2 inch strips to either side of the 2 1/2 inch white strip to create one signature block. Write a message or favorite scripture on the white material. Congratulations to Margaret Cooley on winning the November blocks. October, 2008 (due in November) - A quilt block made of red and green fabrics for Christmas. Patterns were handed out at the October meeting. Congratulations to Sheryl Evans on winning the October blocks. September, 2008 (due in October) - Spider web block with red centers. The instructions can be found at Quiltville Custom Quilting - http://quiltville.com/spiderwebpf.html . August, 2008 (due in September) - Flower block. You should have received a pattern at the August meeting. The blocks should be constructed on a 9 1/2" square of brown or pink background fabric. The stacked flower shapes should be alternating colors of pink and chocolate and the leaves should be green. July, 2008 (due in August) - Whirling Geese, courtesy of McCalls. Also, be sure to check out the no waste method for making your Flying Geese components used in the Whirling Geese block pattern.
